N.E. and Ruby Green Hospice House
The N.E. and Ruby Green Hospice House is the area’s first inpatient hospice facility. Oftentimes, our hospice patients wish to remain in their own homes; however, there are times when a patient’s care cannot be managed at home. There may be a need for medication adjustment or the need for more skilled care than loved ones can provide. These times are when patients and families turn to the Hospice House.

The Hospice House is a 15,000 square foot facility located adjacent to the Tidelands Hospice administrative office on N. Fraser Street in Georgetown, SC. The Hospice House features twelve (12) private rooms, each designed with the physical and psychological comforts of home in mind. All rooms have a private handicapped-accessible bathroom with a walk-in shower with bench seat. The rooms include a bed, bedside table, recliner, television and armoire. A sleeper sofa can accommodate a family member who may wish to stay overnight. There are two (2) screened porches for family members and guests to enjoy, as well as a garden area with benches and a fountain.
The Hospice House also features a family living room, chapel, children’s playroom, library, laundry room, family kitchen and dining area. The facility is fully staffed with nurses and aides 24 hours a day and also has physicians on staff. Emotional and spiritual support is also provided to patients and their families by social workers, a chaplain, counselor, and volunteers.

Admission to the Hospice House
All patients served by Tidelands Community Hospice meet basic hospice criteria – a physician has certified that the patient has a life expectancy of six months or less. Admission into our Hospice House is prioritized by assessing the medical needs of the patient, as well as exploring emotional needs. Patients can be admitted to the hospice house from our homecare program (Tidelands patients residing at home) or can be directly admitted upon discharge from a hospital. Patient status is reviewed frequently by team members and a physician to ensure that services at the Hospice House remain appropriate. Oftentimes, when symptoms have been managed, patients can return to their homes and continue to receive care with Tidelands’ homecare team.
There are several different categories for admission into the hospice house:
- General Inpatient Care: A patient is in need of symptom management, such as medication adjustment for a pain crisis A patient requires more skilled care than a loved one can provide at home, usually in response to a medical crisis A patient and family member require teaching and assistance in order to transition from a hospital to home or nursing home
- Respite Care: Respite care is available to Tidelands patients for up to a five night stay at one time, based upon bed availability.
- Residential Care: When a patient no longer meets the criteria for Medicare/Medicaid general inpatient care, short term residential care may be available as an option, based upon bed availability. A room and board rate will apply for this category: patient must meet basic criteria for hospice care, but no longer meets guidelines for hospice inpatient care. The Hospice House team will make this determination.
